A strong education plays a significant role in an individual’s prosperity. We work with schools and nonprofits to define the most effective opportunities to support students, teachers and schools and then plug volunteers, mentors and tutors into those roles. We currently partner with Reagan High School and are beginning relationships with Pickle Elementary School and Webb Middle School. Our long-term desire is to create a system that can be used by any Austinite to influence any school in any neighborhood.
Thriving families and communities are necessary for the well being of our city, and no individual can be overlooked. Our heaviest involvement is currently in the St. John community where we partner with residents, local neighborhood organizations and Austin-area nonprofits. We desire to assist in replicating the work that is being done in St. John to various neighborhoods throughout Central Texas. In order to serve and love foster and adopted children and their families, we connect volunteers with state and nonprofit foster care and adoption agencies. As we continue to learn more about our city and its people, we will expand our involvement to other geographies and populations.
The condition of someone’s health can trump whether they have a great education, job or home. Thus, working with service providers and practitioners and understanding how to assist people in obtaining healthcare is vital to a flourishing Austin. The For the City Network is eager to become more involved with healthcare in Central Texas by building collaborations in this area.
Housing is fundamental to the stability and success of a family and individual. The For the City Network is interested in connecting volunteers to organizations concerned with renovating and remodeling homes and securing housing for those in need.
For an individual to provide for themselves and their family, they must gain stable employment. To ensure that individuals are equipped for employment, we are focused on finding ways for volunteers to support existing job training programs and organizations. From providing child-care during job training (and) workshops to teaching financial literacy classes, we are eager to partner with organizations in a variety of capacities.
